When tasked with creating a video interview that featured Artist Corps community organizers for some of the Hyde Park Jazz Festival’s (HPJF) grant applications, my aim was to create a retro, homemade style video that encapsulates the friendly neighborhood feeling of the Artist Corps summer programming events. The South Merrill community garden feels like a magical, tucked-away haven for meeting neighbors, enjoying good weather and music, reading a book, and–of course–gardening. The events that the Hyde Park Jazz Festival (HPJF) holds there throughout the summer is just one of many examples of the wonderful things it brings to communities. I remember not being able to tell who knew each other prior to the event and who was meeting for the very first time, thanks to the welcoming people of the neighborhood. I hope you can understand a little bit of why I have become so fond of the South Side of Chicago and its music from watching this video.
